Drafting process for "Tom Mann and his Times"

Torr08 - Featuring a mixture of evidently biographical information and more general historical records, this selection of research contains information of as much interest to those studying the Communist Party, or the Labour Movement as a whole, as it is to the student of Tom Mann. Mann's correspondence with George Lansbury, Keir Hardie, John Burns, Peter Kropotkin and Harry Pollitt provides a variety of perspectives covering the development of the Labour movement. Mann's speeches and publications include the Open Letter to British Soldiers for which Mann was imprisoned, his speech to the first RILU Conference, and an interview he gave on the subject of [John Stuart?] Mills. The biographical writings on Tom Mann include Harry Pollitt's first-hand account of the Mann and Pollitt trial. Alongside Wal Hannington's biography of Mann is Torr's first (48 page) biography titled 'Tom Mann'. The first full-length edition of 'Tom Mann' is then followed by tributes to him from authors including The Communist Party of the United States of America. His global influence reached further than the United States however, for this reason the grouping also includes press cuttings relating to China from Mann's time there, leaflets produced by the South African Labour Party, a film strip commentary on the history of the Australian Communist Party, and discussion of whether or not it is practical to form an 'American Labor Party'. Some of the images in this collection of research materials include photographs and cartoons of Tom Mann, as well as photographs of other key political figures. Tom Mann often wrote contributions to journals of the time including the Journal of the Amalgamted Engineering Union, other journals included in this grouping are the Australian journal 'The Socialist' from 1906 to 1909 and the 'Monthly Report'. Other highlights include a letter to Tom Mann which comments on Ramsay Macdonald's percieved influence over Keir Hardie; Tom Mann's letters from prison; discussion of the 1898 unity agreement between the SDF and the ILP; and a letter from Tom Mann to his comrades at Oxford University, expressing his feelings concerning 'the coming trial'.

The magazines run from Issue 1, Volume 1, dated 2nd April 1906; through to Issue 141, dated February 19 1909. These journals use a variety of techniques to convey their message: from a brief overview of the Socialism-related news on the first page, to more detailed items of socialist theory and commentary on the second page, a focus on national or local stories on the third page, then the use of political theory to challenge the way in which current events are unfolding and capitalism's role in them on the fourth page; the means of addressing the socialist argument vary from page to page throughout each edition.

Box of pamphlets by or about Tom Mann

CP/IND/TORR/07 - This grouping contains a variety of items relating to Tom Mann's campaigning career; the first of these is his Biography written by Dona Torr. Three editions of this publication serve to illustrate the means by which it has reached its present form. The first 1936 version of 'Tom Mann' predated the first full biography of 'Tom Mann', and only consisted of 48 pages. The publisher, Lawrence and Wishart, released this version prior to the first full biography by the same author, and in the same year, so that the reader could sample this version before the full version was published months later. The first complete edition of 'Tom Mann', by Donna Torr (1936) does not contain any introduction. The second (1944) full-edition is the version published after Mann's death; this edition makes use of Harry Pollitt's 'Tribute' to Tom Mann, as a foreword to the work, following publication of the tribute in 1941. This work by Pollitt can also be viewed here individually, as it was published by the Communist Party of Great Britain and by the Committee of the Coventry Tom Mann Memorial Trades and Labour Hall Fund; the same Trades and Labour Hall Fund which published 'A Short Biography' of Mann by Wal Hannington.

This grouping also contains various editions of the 'Monthly Report and Journal' of the 'Amalgamated Engineering Union' between March 1920 and August 1921, this includes twelve issues from one volume of the Industrial Syndicalist Monthly, which includes several articles by Tom Mann. He attended and delivered reports to two conferences of the 'National Minority Movement' and one conference of 'The Red Trade Union Internatiomal' between 1921 and 1927; his reports are included here.
