Correspondence with Communists and political thinkers of the era at home and abroad

CP/MONT/6. A substantial quantity of this correspondence took place during the second world war and for this reason it includes references to rationing, the invasion of Russia, and the British Communist Party's policy with regard to the war. Montagu's writings also come to the fore in an uncorrected script and in reviews of his work, including that by Harry Pollitt. Montagu corresponded with George Bernard Shaw on the subject of film censorship and with scholars on the subject of George Bernard Shaw. Montagu enjoyed a more jovial relationship with H. G. Wells as they agreed 'a holiday from agreeing to disagree as we do should provide light exercise and entertainment'.

Correspondence regarding proposed visit to Britain of Eve Yarotski

CP/IND/MONT/6/11. Correspondence with Montagu's cousin Herbert Samuel and others regarding proposed visit to Britain of Eve Yarotski, 1927-1929. This correspondence reveals the diplomatic challenges to be overcome for a Russian citizen to visit an English citizen during the latter 1920's.

Correspondence with George Bernard Shaw 1924-29

CP/IND/MONT/6/12. Correspondence with George Bernard Shaw 1924-29 (photocopies) with copy article of Shaw's on censorship with covering letter from Soviet film agency 10.6.43. This correspondence between Montagu and George Bernard Shaw relates mainly to the production of Shaw's plays. In this vein Shaw provides commentary on censorship, the future of oratory versus cinema and the subject of film production itself.

Correspondence with John Strachey July-August 1940 relating to Communist policy towards the war and Strachey's July 1940, Correspondence with Sean O'Casey, mainly 1928-30 regarding the film of Juno and the Paycock, directed by Alfred Hitchcock in 1930; also one letter from O'Casey re Bernard Shaw 9.12.55.

CP/IND/MONT/6/14. Correspondence with Samuel Weiss, Jurgen Kuczynski, Elizabeth Bergner and other scholars regarding George Bernard Shaw.

Correspondence with H.G. Wells with copy of Wells' articles on Communism

CP/IND/MONT/6/15. Correspondence with H.G. Wells with copy of HGW's articles 'Communism - a cancer' and 'Memorandum on the relations of Mr and Mrs Webb to Russia', 1943.

Correspondence with Ellen Wilkinson, 1942-1946

CP/IND/MONT/6/16. Correspondence with Ellen Wilkinson including a memorandum on the unity of the working-class movement, April 1944. Other items describe Union issues around Wesley Ruggles, as a foreign national, being permitted to produce films in the UK. Concerns surrounding Ellen Wilkinson MP's health and mentions of reading material Montagu sent to Wilkinson are also included.

CP/IND/MONT/6/17. Correspondence with Sir Solly Zuckerman With regard to The Zoological Society of London. This correspondence covers the subjects of research fellowships in zoo keeping, more effective utilisation of the society's money, and moves to expel a member after allegations regarding the care of animals.
