Correspondence and cuttings relating to foreign affairs and Watford CPGB

CP/MONT/12. There are three core focal points to this grouping; writings about Mongolia as a country, trade with China and Russia 1948-1962, and papers from the Watford branch of the CPGB. The records relating to Monglia include correspondence with Monglian Academics and with the Mongolian President, alongside records relating to Montagu's understanding of the country as gleaned from his visits there. The records on trade with China and Russia include correspondence with ambassadors and records of conversations with five Chinese Government Ministers. The papers from the Watford branch of the CPGB refer to the political activities thereof and include circulars from the London District CPGB.

Cuttings of reviews of Montagu's book about Mongolia 'Land of Blue Sky'

CP/IND/MONT/12/2. Cuttings with related correspondence, 1957. This book, taking the form of a travelogue, describes the improvements Montagu sees as he compares a feudal Mongolia with the Socialist Mongolia he is visiting, the reviews are largely sympathetic to this work. Other issues covered by the cuttings include nuclear disarmament and protecting the British film industry through use of the 1927 Quota Act.

Two transcript essays by Montagu's wife Hell Montagu, n.d.

CP/IND/MONT/12/9. The first is an essay on feelings of longing for a man's attentions and the necessity of lying in relationships. The second is a discussion of the motivations experienced that have influenced different actions in her life. Both focus on how various actions are influenced and describe motivations from a personal perspective.

CP/IND/MONT/12/10. Printed articles, pamphlets and cuttings, n.d. These papers include a lecture by Montagu on the character of the Mongolian People's Republic. They also contain a piece by Montagu titled 'A Prophecy', in which Montagu states that: 'the truth is that very few peoples feel even the desire for a share in government, and only a few occidentally half-educated Aryans feel a real desire for political liberty...if we are to make healthy the birth of a stable industrialism, we shall need a dictatorship'. Other items include The May 1941 edition of 'University Forward: Organ of the University Labour Federation' and some commentary on the playing of football in Russia.
